Finding Freedom to Succeed with Vasavi Kumar, LMSW, MSED
Just about everyone at some point bumps up against struggles in life rooted in past pain, whether it's addiction, depression, self-sabotage or other mental blocks to success. Working to free people from their past and take charge of their future, Vasavi Kumar is a media-savvy social worker, certified life coach and survivor.
An author, coach, speaker and media host, Vasavi (SAY VAH-savi) holds dual master's degrees, in Special Education from Hofstra University, and in Social Work from Columbia University. Creator of the mindset training program, Source of Your Success, she specializes in empowering people to move beyond whatever has limited them in the past.
"It doesn't matter what walk of life you're from or what you've been through, what I'm teaching and what I'm sharing can change anybody's life," she says. And everything she teaches, she has practiced herself.
Vasavi's life story is one of overcoming odds and to reach previously unimagined heights of success. Born to parents who emigrated from India, she was raised on Long Island, N.Y., in a Brahmin household that stressed obedience to Hindu principles through prayer and sober living. But after striving to be a "good girl," in her formative years, she lost herself as a young woman in drugs, alcohol and relationships. Then she faced her biggest challenge ever when, in December, 2002, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Vasavi turned to a blend of Eastern and Western medicine and spiritual practice, and surrounding herself with a strong support network. In time she found the strength to overcome and to live in freedom, not only from her past but eventually, from medication. Along the way she even began to look at her illness as a blessing. She discovered it did not define her, but that she had the freedom to define her own success and happiness.
In her coaching practice, Vasavi relies on her compassion to relieve human suffering which she learned in visits to India, first as a young girl with her family and later as a young woman on her own.
"When I became old enough to visit India on my own, I lived there for a year, and served as a teacher to survivors of sex trafficking," she says. "It was a year of awakening for me, and soaked the culture forever in my essence. These concepts influence everything I do and everyone I serve."
Through her faith and the principles of perseverance, strength, and devotion, Vasavi found freedom to build the life of her dreams. She created a business she loves, "serving people and hanging out with some of the most interesting and influential luminaries of our time." As former host of the radio program Deep Talk, she interviewed change agents such as John Gray, Neale Donald Walsch, Ali Brown, Sonia Choquette and Lisa Nichols. She earned certification as a life coach through Accomplishment Coaching, an International Coach Federation (ICF) accredited school. She is coauthor, in collaboration with Sandra Yancey, Marcia Weider, Lisa Sasevich and Lisa Nichols, of the bestselling book, Succeeding in Spite of Everything. She and her husband Ashish live and work in Kansas City, where she appears regularly on Kansas City Live on 41 Action News (NBC), answering viewers' life questions. And she is an advocate for people everywhere suffering from mental illness, proving that it's possible to overcome odds and live a life of your dreams.
For Vasavi, it all goes back to her Eastern upbringing, Western education and life experience. "The blend of spiritual connection, cultural respect and seeking of wisdom supported my wish to make my life look different than anyone would have traditionally thought."
